Films For The Future
SiskiyouFilmFest • Grants Pass, Oregon
February 7th, 8th & 9th, 2008

It seems like just yesterday when we decided that a film festival focused on the environment could work in southern Oregon. It had never been done before in this state, but we decided it was worth the effort. Our goal was, and still is to inspire change in the lives of those attending our festival. We are grateful to Ashland residents for supporting the festival for the past six years, however, this year the festival will take place in Grants Pass to broaden the audiences and to help move environmental concerns more into the mainstream. We hope many Jackson County folks will travel to Josephine County to see some of the great films which will be offered.

When the Siskiyou Environmental Film Festival began people had to travel to a film festival to see socially aware environmental films. Today, mainstream theaters and the internet bring us more than we could have imagined. But, even today, you must come to events like SiskiyouFilmFest to see many of the best films being produced.

Many people are concerned that film festivals showing environmental films may be a bit depressing. They certainly could be—some film producers are upbeat and some are not. Some are long-winded and others are more succinct. If we wanted to, we could have audiences crying and depressed—it wouldn’t be hard to do. But that’s not our goal.

Although we know that the very life support systems that allow humans to exist are at risk, in addition to exposing audiences to a deeper understanding of these issues the goal of the SiskiyouFilmFest is to highlight the best sustainable solutions currently available. We want to enhance your understanding of the issues while instilling a sense of shared personal responsibility for making sure societies make the best choices on how to proceed.

We also want you to know that although some of the challenges are huge, there are still small, easy changes each of can make to be of help. And there are larger changes societies must make. It comes down to two simple questions: “Do we have the will to shift our behavior, to live in harmony with the earth—our life support system that nurtures and sustains us?” If the answer is yes, then the next question is “How can we share this planet with all the other species which inhabit it?”

We are aware that our future on earth depends on our actions today and we believe that humans have the potential to understand, learn and act to insure our own survival.
