How to Make Your Ad

Now that Sentient Times is totally electronic we need to have our ads formatted correctly. Following is a list of do’s and don’ts to help you send us a problem-free ad.

Color Ads
All items in a color ad must by in cmyk mode for our printer. Make sure all graphics and all color are coded to cmyk before placing them in your ad or sending them to us. Please refer to the additional information in the Grayscale section below before sending us your ad.
Grayscale Ads (Black & White)
  1. Please make sure any graphics in your ad copy have been changed in the “mode” menu to grayscale or black and white before you place them in your ad. Any other formats such as cmyk, rgb, etc. will cause errors with the image setter at the printer. Also, if your graphics programs offers an option called OPI (Open Press Interface), please uncheck the box before saving. We cannot use ads exported with that option checked. They will not print correctly.
  2. Please size the graphic for the space available in your ad before placing it into the layout. If you place a large graphic into the layout and reduce it in your layout program, the file size will be larger than needed and cause problems when placed on the page with other ads and graphics.
  3. Please make sure your ad is sized correctly for our layout columns. Ad sizes can be found on our web site, www.SentientTimes.com.
  4. Please export the ad to pdf format before sending it to us and use the printer option with the fonts embedded option checked. We need the fonts embedded or changed to outlines. If you use outlined fonts, please tell us that when you send the ad.
  5. Please tell us what program you created your ad in. We have had some problems with InDesign formatting, so if you tell us that you used this program, we can try a work-around since we currently have that program installed on our computer.
  6. Please tell us what platform you are working on, Mac or PC. Either is OK, but sometimes it helps to know.
